ScienceDojo Began Before There Was a Website

ScienceDojo did not begin with a website, a business plan or a piece of software.


It began with students saying something I had heard far too many times:

“I’m just not good at science.”

Over more than a decade of teaching and tutoring Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science, I met many capable students who had started to believe this about themselves.

They were not unintelligent. They were not lazy. In many cases, they were genuinely curious and wanted to learn. But somewhere along the way, they had encountered an explanation that did not make sense to them. The class moved forward, the confusion remained, and eventually that confusion became part of how they saw themselves.

“I don’t understand this” slowly became “I am not good at this.”

That difference matters.

Students do not all understand in the same way

Some students understand a concept when they see a diagram. Others need a real-world example. Some need to talk through the idea, while others need to attempt several questions before everything begins to connect.

However, education does not always have enough time or flexibility to accommodate those differences.

A teacher may need to teach one concept to an entire class and continue according to a fixed schedule. A student who misses one important connection can then struggle with every topic built on top of it.

As a tutor, I had the opportunity to slow that process down.

I could ask a student how they were thinking. I could identify the precise point where their understanding had broken down. I could change the explanation, use a different example and allow them to try again.

I saw what happened when the right explanation finally reached the learner.

Their expression changed. Their confidence returned. A subject they had feared began to feel manageable.

Those moments stayed with me.

The first idea behind ScienceDojo

The original idea behind ScienceDojo was simple:

What if we created a learning environment where understanding came before memorisation—and where students received support suited to the way they learned?

At first, this was not a detailed technology product. It was an educational belief shaped by years of working directly with students.

I wanted students to have access to tutors who did more than deliver lessons. A good tutor should observe how a student thinks, recognise gaps in understanding, provide meaningful practice and help the learner rebuild confidence.

But as I continued developing the idea, I noticed another problem.

Online tutoring was often fragmented across many different tools. The lesson might happen through one platform, homework might be sent through a messaging app, resources stored somewhere else, and scheduling, payments and progress records managed separately.

A video call could deliver a lesson, but it could not create a complete learning experience by itself.

That raised a bigger question:

Could we bring tutoring, practice, progress tracking, communication and learning support together within one connected system?

Bringing education and technology together

My background has always moved between education and technology.

I have worked as a teacher, tutor, school leader, software developer and Educational Technology researcher. For a long time, these may have appeared to be separate parts of my career. ScienceDojo gradually became the place where they connected.

My teaching experience helped me understand the learner’s problem.

My experience in school leadership helped me understand the operational problem.

Software development gave me the ability to begin turning ideas into systems.

Educational Technology research helped me examine how learning science, user experience and artificial intelligence could support the process responsibly.

ScienceDojo therefore did not emerge from technology looking for an educational use. It grew from an educational problem, with technology becoming one part of the solution.

From a belief to a working platform

The idea gradually moved from conversations and manual processes into designs, workflows and software.

Today, ScienceDojo exists as a working and continually evolving web platform. It brings together areas such as tutor profiles, bookings, learner dashboards, lesson organisation, practice activities, subscriptions and payments, communication workflows and administrative controls.

We are also exploring how AI-supported practice can help students retrieve knowledge, recognise gaps and receive more personalised learning opportunities—while keeping teachers and tutors at the centre of important educational decisions.

The platform is far more developed than the original idea. But the purpose has remained remarkably consistent.

ScienceDojo exists because a student’s difficulty with one explanation should not become a permanent belief about their ability.

A low grade does not always reveal what a learner is capable of. Sometimes it reveals that the learner has not yet received the explanation, practice or support that allows their understanding to appear.

ScienceDojo began with the belief that we could do better for those students.

The website came later.
